There are now 14 representatives and 3 senators of AAPI descent who are currently serving in Congress. Additionally, there are three non-voting delegates of Pacific Islander descent also currently serving. While we celebrate this historic win, we have to also recognize the work that is still needed to be done.
People of Asian descent have settled in North America since the midth century. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, hundreds of thousands of Chinese, Japanese and Filipinos, as well as smaller numbers of Koreans and Indians, came to the United States primarily to work on plantations, factories and railroads. During the first waves of Asian immigration, racial tension was high as white laborers feared that they would lose their jobs to or have their salaries undercut by new immigrants.
